As part of Year 1’s topic lessons they visited The Dudley Canal Trust. Year 1 took part in a local workshop to discover all about the history of the tunnels and took a canal boat through the tunnels to finally discover – What is at the end of Dudley Canal?

During Spring Term in Reception, we have been on a journey around the world! We explored the United Kingdom, Antarctica, China, Spain and Africa, learning about the varied environments, and the lives of the people and animals who live there. Whilst learning about each of our destinations, we took part in a variety of creative activities, including making Spanish fans, painting UK landmarks, making Chinese dragons and creating our own Antarctic snow scenes. In Nursery we learnt all about nursery rhymes we completed many creative activities all term, we threaded spiders webs to create Incy Wincy spider, we also explored the texture of bubble wrap to create a big 3D spider. We worked collaboratively to create a big sheep and folded paper to create a cheeky monkey!

Over this term, we have been very busy. We looked at the Hindu festival of Light – Diwali. Went on an autumn walk, used part, part wholes to solve maths problems, read the story of Elmer by David Mckee, creating our own mat in the style of Elmer’s patterns. We even carried out a water investigation to help teddy find a suitable material to build his tent.

In two’s outside we were learning about our environment. We found some large sticks to look for different mini beasts. We then use the sticks to dig and move around the leaves to see what we could find.

During Autumn Term in Reception, we have been exploring our favourite bedtime stories. These include; The Three Little Pigs, Goldilocks and the Three bears, We're Going on a Bear Hunt, Room on the Broom, The Gruffalo and The Three Billy Goats Gruff. In Nursery, we have been having lots of fun outside! We went on a nature walk and discovered many natural items. We went to the fruit and vegetable patches and collected pears and tomatoes; however, the minibeasts had eaten lots of them! Maybe it was The Very Hungry Caterpillar! We found many minibeasts in the garden, we found a woodlouse, centipede and there were lots of ants. We have also had a fantastic time in our new mud kitchen making lots of different meals!

This half term in Reception, we have completed a variety of ‘Understanding the World’ activities. We used mirrors to observe our features and discussed differences between ourselves and our friends. We painted self-portraits to be displayed in our classroom. After discussing our own environment, we began to learn about the environments of other people and animals.
