- BBC Visit School
On Tuesday 1 st July, our school council arranged for the BBC to come into school and film us talking about the fact that we have not had a Lollipop person to help us cross the road for nearly a year now. We think this is a very dangerous situation and want something done as soon as possible. During the afternoon, the BBC filmed the school council discussing the matter and then showing the reporter the problem at the top of Walter Road. They interviewed parents, Mr Neal, and also our headteacher, Mrs Richards, who shared their concerns about the dangers of Wilkinson Avenue. We very much hope that we will have a Lollipop person or a zebra crossing installed very soon.
- Science Team Take Second Place!
Science Fortnight ended with a team of two Year 5 and two Year 6 pupils visiting King Edward’s School, Birmingham to take part in their annual Wilkins-Franklin Inter School Science Competition. Last year we managed to finish runners-up in the inaugural competition and this year we wondered if we could go one better. The team played 3 rounds with the initial round being a timed multiple choice quiz. This was followed by a practical investigation where the children had to design a bridge that could hold the most weight whilst also being the lightest bridge. After the first two rounds the organisers announced that amazingly, we were 30 points ahead so would automatically qualify for the final. The other schools would play off against each other to determine who would meet us in the grand final. The grand final arrived and although we scored 4 points the other team scored 6 meaning we would again finish runners-up. A fantastic achievement again – well done Wilkinson.
- Science Fortnight
To kickstart science fortnight we invited scientists into school to hold workshops with each year group. Year 1 had lots of fun with the rocket challenge and Year 2 were adding things to water as part of a kitten rescue. Year 3 and Year 6 learnt how crimes are solved using fingerprints and blood spatter patterns. Year 4 used elastic racers to see how far their cars would go and Year 5 completed a time challenge with jigsaw puzzles. The following week was the Science Fair where children have the opportunity to complete science projects and bring them into school. This year we had some fantastic entries from the whole school; the quality of projects was incredible. Children had spent lots of time on the experiments and recording what had happened and many had even worked together to create their projects. Parents were wowed when they came into see them. They were also invited to take part in science lessons in class and loved the workshops with their children. They took part in a range of different scientific activities such as making a water filter, replicating a beak to pick up food and making electrical circuits. At the end of the week, it was a really hard task for the judges to pick winners. For the first time the Science Ambassadors also got to vote for their own winner.

- Early Years Sunflower Art Project
Children throughout our Early Years (aged 2-5 years), are currently taking part in their very own Sunflower Project. They have been using their senses to explore real sunflowers and have also planted some sunflower seeds to care for and grow at home. As part of our sunflower project, we looked at the famous artwork ‘Sunflowers’ by Vincent Van Gogh. This inspired the children to create their own sunflower art using a range of media - such as paint, collage and crayons. They used a range of techniques including drawing, printing with sponges, and using handprints to create their work. 35 of these pieces have been selected to be displayed at Wolverhampton Art Gallery. If you wish to view the chosen artwork it will be on display until the end of May. For opening hours please look at the art gallery website: Visit Wolverhampton Art Gallery and ask a member of staff to direct you to the display.
- Year 2 - India
As part of their topic comparing the UK to India, Year 2 were delighted to welcome a special visitor, Sohan Kailey, a Bhangra dancer and storyteller, into school. Throughout the day, they learnt about the diverse landscapes of India and learnt all about Indian cuisine, leaving everyone’s mouths watering! The children had a wonderful time immersing themselves in the culture and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It was a fantastic way to make their learning even more engaging and memorable!
- The Victorians – Year 1
We were introduced to our “Victorians” topic with a fantastic workshop from historical workshops. Mr De’Ath taught us all about the Victorians and what it would have been like for the children living during the Victorian era. We explored lots of topics including toys, homes, jobs and school. We particularly enjoyed the archaeological dig where we used our enquiry skills to identify historical artefacts including coins and buckles. Our Victorian school experience gave us the opportunity to write using chalk slates and learn all about the Victorian school punishments! We also designed our own peg dolls and explored some of the traditional toys including snakes and ladders and dominos. We thoroughly enjoyed our Victorian day and are looking forward to learning more during the summer term.
