Design Technology in Early Years!
This term we have been exploring using our skills through play.

Cooking in Year 1
This term children learned where food comes from, were introduced to the Eatwell plate and also what foods we should eat as part of a healthy diet. Children then looked at seasonal foods and the skill of chopping carefully. They used the bridge and claw method to cut carrots, potatoes and apples. The children then tasted them, deciding the apple was the best because it was sweet and juicy, but the potatoes were least favourite and were plain.
Pupil Voice
I taste tested different fruit and vegetables. I enjoyed eating the apple because it was juicy, but the potato didn’t taste like anything. I learnt to chop them using the claw grip and bridge. Charlotte.

Cooking in Year 2
This term children revisited where food comes from and the Eatwell plate. As their topic was World War II children learned what foods and recipes were available back then. Children chose to make Rock Cakes and followed a recipe, using chopping skills, combining ingredients and weighing. Children then evaluated their Rock Cakes.
Pupil Voice
I enjoyed cooking Rock Cakes. I learnt how to follow a recipe and make cakes I have never made before. Iyanuoluwa

Structures in Year 3
Children learnt how tools began in the Stone Age and how they were made from natural materials and have improved over the years. Children also learned about structures and what is needed to make a solid structure. They then designed and created a prototype of a home that could have been built and used during the Stone Age, even including natural materials they could find in the school grounds.
Pupil Voice
I loved making the teepee because it was interesting to find out what sort of homes people in the Stone Age lived in. Making the teepees was really fun using the sticks and materials although the bit putting the bands on to make it stick and stay together was a little bit tricky. It must have been tricky to make the teepees in real life using Stone Age equipment. Gursimar.

Structures and Circuits in Year 4
As part of their Roman’s topic, children researched what a colosseum was and what it was used for, designing and labelling their own diagrams. They then created a circuit to light up their colosseum.
Pupil Voice
We made a colosseum. We made the shape out of paper bowls and decorated it to make it look like it was from the Roman time. I enjoyed making the windows as it was a lot of fun. Maci

Sewing in Year 5
As part of their Vikings topic children designed an emblem for their sail. Children practised sewing their emblem using the running and cross stitch, and even attempted the running back stitch. Children then joined two pieces of materials together using the running stitch, they later reseached why this stitch is not suitable for a sail.
Pupil Voice
We did sewing. We learnt how to back stitch and the running and cross stitch. I enjoyed creating my own design for the emblem. Harpretam.

Structures in Year 6
As part of their Natural Disasters topic children researched current flood defences in Bewdley before creating a list of criteria needed for their own flood defence design. They developed their ideas through discussion and sharing ideas with their peers before designing and creating a prototype. Children then evaluated their design against their criteria.
Pupil Voice
We learnt about flood defences. I enjoyed my school trip to Bewdley to see the flood defences. We also got to build our own and tested different materials. Archie.
