Science at Wilkinson

Science lessons at Wilkinson Primary School are about inspiring the children with a sense of awe and wonder through first hand practical experiences. We give the children time to explore equipment, materials and the environment to come up with their own thoughts and questions, developing the children's natural curiosity about the world around them and a set of skills and attitudes such as open-mindedness, perseverance, collaboration, observation and questioning, which are useful skills for life.

From watching chicks hatch in Foundation to building complex electrical circuits in Key Stage 2 the children are positive and enthusiastic about science and can see its applications in everyday life. We have children with aspirations to be a scientist and it is the lifelong interest that we want to nurture in our rapidly developing scientific world.

INTENT

In Science, all our children will aspire to use science to explain, predict and analyse the natural world; building key knowledge and concepts, being excited and curious about natural phenomena and understanding methods, processes and uses of science.

SCIENCE COVID-19 STATEMENT SEPTEMBER 2020

In Science lessons, teachers will follow Wilkinson Primary School Covid-19 Risk Assessment September 2020 and Government Guidelines.

Teachers will promote good hygiene and the thorough cleaning of equipment.

Here are the most pertinent sections of Wilkinson’s Covid-19 Risk assessment that relate to Science lessons.

School avoids any activities which involve the passing of items around a class i.e. food making / tasting, artefact sharing, touching activities etc.

· although practical lessons (science) can go ahead if equipment can be cleaned thoroughly and the classroom or other learning environment is occupied by the same children or young people in one day, or properly cleaned between cohorts. (Coronavirus (COVID-19): implementing protective measures in education and childcare settings).

External Agencies will be allowed onto the school site following the correct procedures: Appointment to be made prior to visit, use of hand sanitiser on entrance to site, maintaining of social distancing.

· The school will contact every user and inform them of usage expectations:

· Workshops/peripatetic teaching/class projects from outside providers in some cases to be delivered remotely through video conferencing.

Science Displayed

At our school we are continually striving to develop Science in the curriculum and each teacher's aim is to display the current Scientific topic in class.

Science In Action
In Year 6, the children tested how effective exercise is for raising your heart rate. They took part in several different activities and counted their pulse rate at regular intervals to see which one was more strenuous.  This activity was completed so the children could then go on to plan their own experiment around exercise and its result on heart rate.

This set of nine colourful postcards provides hands on activities which link to the topics of electricity, sound, forces, and changes of state. Ideal for use in the classroom, the mini-investigations are fun to do and get children thinking about the concepts involved. They are also perfect for use in after school clubs and science weeks. Two cartoon characters, Marvin and Milo demonstrate the fun experiments, which are designed to appeal to primary age children. They include: Alka -Seltzer rockets, magic balloon, making a lava lamp, musical coat hanger, making a foil boat and many more. This resource has been provided by the Institute of Physics.
